The Irregulars

The 'Irregulars' Marbled_tiwaz_by_luckmann-d3d3qd8

Formed by the authority of Ser Barton T. Friedhold, Knight Lieutenant of the Knights Concordic, the 'Irregulars' represent a communal effort to solve the problems facing Surna. Bringing a wide variety of experience to the table, the Irregulars are as of yet a rag-tag fighting force loosely organized under Ser Friedhold. They are tasked with reducing crime, banditry, and especially heresy in the region.

Next Event: Census and Immigration
Summary : Upon arriving in Surna, Ser Barton was disturbed to learn of the innumerable problems which Surna faces, and professed a concern that communications between Surna and the rest of the world might be being intercepted or otherwise blocked; it was 3 months after the fact that the Knights learned that Commander David Halberry had bee murdered. As the first assignment for his newly formed Task Force, Ser Barton assigned Halaster Keldorn to investigate local outlaw gangs by inquiring of Suile Glan. One gang, the so called 'Southron Devils', stood out in particular, for being a very large and well equipped mercenary group that had recently moved into the region. Barton further assigned Vladislav Radimir, Tobias Markan, and Ser Keldorn to inquire of the local Ha'dri population as to their whereabouts, given the large number of Ha'dri members in the Southron Devils. While they were unable to determine their main settlement, the Irregulars were able to learn of a local drug den, run by the Nova Cartel, frequented by Ha'dri customers. The day after the next, the Irregulars moved to raid the Den to detain and interrogate a member of the Devils. After a pitched battle, the Task Force managed to apprehend at least two of the mercenary Ha'dri. After almost two months of sustained questioning, isolation, and even alchemical suggestion, the two captured Ha'dri have finally let something spill - the name of a contact, within the Office of Census and Immigration, who's been providing them with a staggering amount of information - caravan manifests, trade routes, departure and arrival information - all enough to give them the tools to conduct their nearly perfect campaign of systemic isolation upon Surna, all under the noses of the Surnan Authorities.

Soon after, Barton organized a quick raid with the help of the Irregulars Constable Simon Troph and Lance-Constable Tobias Markan, as well as Harian Nobleman Reinhardt Freiburg to discover the extent of the corruption. What they found was entirely more than they could have expected, and terrible to behold. Upon entering the Offices, they were witness to a terrible, uncomprehensible crime - Stephen Alders, low-level city official, had murdered his wife and two children and mutilated their corpses, skinning them and severing their limbs. This from a man who not only had no history of violent crime, mental illness, or even work dissatisfaction, but also a man who was completely jovial among arrival - while cradling a pistol. Evidence, including a large amount of human fecal matter, the state of the bodies, and the emaciation of Alders himself, suggested that the murders were not recent - that Alders had, in fact, stayed on the island for WEEKS, just waiting for someone to come knocking.

Examination of documents discovered from the Census office further exacerbated the mystery. Far from corruption being a motive, the accounting logs listed no payment ever received - despite a weekly transfer of census records to the Southron Devils. Furthermore, if the man intended secrecy, or even knew what he was doing was treason, he never considered it, as the accounting logs recorded every transaction in copious detail. Nevertheless, it was a boon for Surna and the Irregulars, leading them to the location of the Southron Devil's staging grounds, from where they could raid any point in the wilderness.

The Black Watch mobilized, and the Irregulars went into their first major conflict. With 800 Black Watch soldiers aided by 350 Goblins mustered from the nearby tribes striking 500 Southron Devils aided by 150~ of McAlpines Strum Landsknecht. The Irregulars were given the task of breaking off from the main force to rescue a number of captives held by the Devils, while also trying to seize any sensitive documents held by the Devils before they could destroy them. Following a massive ambush, the Irregulars did just that, raiding the camp and eventually saving over 30 prisoners, while facing against Vladislav Radimir, a Banespawn, and even Marcus Olm.

The battle went exceedingly well for the Surnans, won mostly by discipline, planning, and superior knowledge of the land. With aid from the goblins, the Surnans were able to predict where and when the Devils would plan their ambush - as they no doubt would - and draw them into it with the illusion of victory. The Black Watch faced the hardest casualties with the initial assault of explosives and musket fire, but having anticipated the ambush, they were able to skillfully counter-attack, utilizing extreme discipline never to break ranks. When the Landsknecht moved to flank, they found themselves caught in a forest full of webbing, and then harassed endlessly by Goblin footsoldiers and Goblins on War Spiders. Eventually, with the use of a Cecaelia Storm-Song by Elizabeth Celanduil, the Devils were forced to rout, whereupon they were quickly struck by Goblin 'cavalry'. All in all, the Devils were annihilated, 445 men killed or captured; the Landsknecht suffered 85 losses; while the Black Watch suffered 100 lost men and 200 wounded and the Goblins lost 45 war spiders and 60 Goblins. They would soon find their job was not over, however, with the words of one traumatized prisoner..

*** 'You, there. You're a Knight? You people - your men - you need to know.'

*** Barton Thule Freidhold frowns, looking to the prisoner.

Halaster Keldorn: Mm?

*** **The Prisoner looks to Selena. 'You're new, you wouldn't know... But there's more. Much more.

*** 'More of us, I think. Captives, prisoners. They've been...

*** Aedelric Adahn-Wildercress looks to the man, not looking too excited to hear what he has to say

*** 'Making.. something. Making us work on it, all of us, from the caravans.'

*** 'I was there, I saw the machinery, and the black - the black STUFF that came out..'

Halaster Keldorn: Shit.

*** 'I saw captives drop like flies, and shoveled into a pit like so much garbage..'

*** 'And I saw the man... The elf, I think, but he didn't look like any elf I had ever seen.. gray, with a golden face.'

*** 'He was in charge. He built the machine, and it made anything he wanted.'

Halaster Keldorn: Dverfar?

*** 'Gold, mostly. Which he gave to the insects and the lizards. But sometimes, other things. Green and silver and bright yellow..

*** 'And sometimes black. When it made black, it pleased the golden-faced elf more than anything else, He'd collect it, the few drops of it, and scurry off.

*** 'But..There was something about the machine that made us sick. Only we could go near it. Forced us to.

*** 'Sometimes, if people got too close, they'd just fall over and die, without a single thing wrong with them.

*** Aedelric Adahn-Wildercress rubs the side of his head carefully.

*** 'So they had to use us...I guess. Disposable labour. There used to be a hundred of us.'

*** 'More would come each day. Caravaneers and merchants, like me.'

[EVENT]: 'Whatever it is they're doing... It has to be stopped. There are still men there. And as long as it's working, the machine, they'll need men to run it...

Aedelric Adahn-Wildercress: Hmm... I have heard of few things that can do such as he claims, but, I doubt he could conjure such a wild undoing tale.

*** 'You think I'm lying? I've seen things that would make your tongue shrivel black for the thought of even daring to lie of such a thing.

*** **The prisoner turns to Barton. 'You've got to stop it. Whatever their doing.. They don't care if they run through a hundred or a thousand or a million people to get what they want.

Barton Thule Freidhold | Pat [LOOC]: *they're

Halaster Keldorn: Well, thats our job, to stop the bad guys.

*** 'I know where it is.. They would put sacks on our heads when they shipped us there. But one day I got a peek. It's in a cave, an old abandoned mine."

You've showed up in server once, and never participated in any of the Irregular's events. I can re-add you, but why do you care so much?

Well, just the other day we had 12 or 15 players on. Others here can attest to that. Do you want me to re-add you?
