OVERVIEW
An island nation far to the south of Sida, shrouded in mystery and beauty; whose inhabitants bear skin of olive-coloured scales and fly through water with beautiful wings. As the blossoms of the cherry trees blow from the canopies, warriors who don exotic armour lie decomposing on the field of battle as the civil war that raged the last twenty years comes to a close.

This is Yasurakanamizu; the Land of Still Water.

HISTORY
The history of Yasurakanamizu begins with its inhabitants, the Mizuyousei. Whose legends tell of an age long ago at the formation of the world that the gods themselves inhabited the isles. They walked among the Yousei who were in every essence immortal. All was peaceful in the isles until a young male of but twenty years grew prideful in his natural talent and demanded a duel with Eiyuugouketsu, the great warrior. Drawing their blades, the tide of battle shifted ever further in favour of Eiyuugouketsu, until the youth drew from his pocket a handful of sand with which he blinded the god and struck him down with his blade. Outraged, the goddess Ingatekimen cursed the Yousei with mortality and created the heavens, a safe haven for the gods away from the dishonour wrought by the Yousei’s blade.

Several decades pass and the Yousei grow ever further into despair, with their godly companions now retreated into the heavens, they toiled the land and reaped the bounty of the sea, brought forth new children in painful labour and erected structures both above and below the water to protect themselves from the dangers that would now stalk the night. Seeing mankind in their pain, the goddess Majikku felt pity for them and descended to the isles atop the mountain Kansetsu when the Yousei saw the divine return to the Earth many went in search of the goddess, when they found her atop the mountain they asked her, “Why have you returned even after we have dishonoured you?” To which she replied, “I feel pity for your labour, take this gift and use it well.” And she taught the disciples Toshita, ‘The Tongue.’ With which they could perform acts their godly counterparts used to. In final passing, the goddess knelt on the ground and slit her stomach for she had broken her solemn vow to the gods to never again meddle in the affairs of their mortal brethren. It is for this reason winter exists as the goddess returns to Aeria and back to heaven looking for a rest to her forlorn soul.

Several ages pass, and the Yousei have developed immensely from their early stages of mortality. Each of the twenty-seven isles of Yasurakanamizu immensely developed as farmland while metropolises are in their early stages underwater. Existing as four city-states, the Yousei are only united through bloodshed. The Empire of Yasurakanamizu was formed through a series of wars waged between the city-state of Kita and its neighbors, Nishi, Nampou, and Higashi; resulting in Emperor Inoichiban of Kita being the first emperor of Yasurakanamizu. In the years to come, the empire would make great leaps and bounds in culture and technology, developing ever further the isles and expanding the borders of the metropolises.

Each of the four cities exist within their own bubbles of breathable air, this magic is held in place by the Whispering Stones, believed to be the only enchanted objects of Toshita, a faint harmonious trilling is heard when one stands near and it glows a faint cyan. It is said that the stones are sustained by the very essence of Majikku. The bubbles also appear to disprove of any living creatures apart from the Yousei, however it is unknown if this applies only to oceanic creatures, as the cities are far below the lung capacity of most terrestrial creatures.

Twenty years ago, Emperor Jikkainanatsu fell ill and died, having borne no heir the city-states were locked once again in bloody civil war as the Empress Migotonaninjou lays claim to throne, backed by the state of Nishi. While Jikkainanatsu’s distant nephew lays claim to the throne, backed by the states of Nampou and Higashi.

Just yesteryear, the war came to an end. The ashes still warm and Migotonaninjou sits atop the throne, the second widowed empress since Yasurakanamizu’s founding. Time has yet to prove whether she would prove a fair and just ruler of the empire, though she has proven fair enough in the first year of rebuilding.

CUSTOMS
Yasurakanamizu culture is very particular when it comes to the use of respectful language and gestures.  Honour, respect’s battlefield counterpart, is defined by the Yousei as holding one’s worst enemies at the highest respect. Fighting honourably, with fair tactics in a true test of prowess rather than employing dirty tactics just to earn a swift victory. Fighting in the open field than from castle walls and the shadows is proof one one’s honour.

Among the cuisine of the Yousei, staples include a variety of seafoods especially mollusks, as well as plants accustomed to a hot, wet environment. Namely rice, leeks, pineapples, coconuts, tea, coffee and a fruit common only to the isles; Kudamono is a blue-purple fruit that grows only in the ashes of the volcano Mikazan, its juice is a powerful hallucinogen, the fruit however is exceedingly rare and dangerous to obtain even one fruit is worth twenty-times its weight in silver.

THE ART OF WAR
Odorichambara, or the Dancing Swordfight, is a style commonly utilized in single combat between two warriors of honour. Each without armour draws two blades, a short blade and a long blade. Through a variety of evasive maneuvers, parries, and blocks; the ultimate task not to kill your combatant but rather to weaken him to the point of submission. It is a stain on the honour of one warrior to deny the mercy pleas of those he has vanquished, as it is the duty of he was bested to end his life with honour.

On the field, however, combat changes drastically. Opposing forces donning exotic armour that offers a wide range of mobility; each warrior charges headlong into battle with his long blade, short blade and often, polearm. Magic is strictly prohibited in war, because it is a sacred gift from the god who felt pity and should not be used to invoke more.

Though in the public eye, war is an ordeal of skill and honour, to those behind it deceit and treachery take center stage. Men who pose before the masses as men of honour plan in secret aiming for any chance to get at each other. Power corrupts, as they say, and as such, various underhanded means as assassination are used in the political warfare between noble houses of the city-states.

Fighting in secret and shadow, legions of stealth warriors called 'hikage' assassinate, blackmail, extort and dishonour nobles behind the curtains of the public theatre. Often regarded old wise tales used by parents to keep their children in line; these hikage are very real, using such weapons comparable to those soldiers on the field as well as balanced throwing knives these hikage are the bane and boon of all high-born as they can not dishonour their opponents by any other means lest their personal honour be diminished.

Among the arsenals of the city-states of Yasurakanamizu are a variety of unique weapons, unseen by modern smiths. The Chukonu, a rapid-firing crossbow capable of launching several bolts with unheard-of speed, dominates ranged warfare. The Hyeopdo, a large polearm used in holding front line from opposing soldiers, essentially a sword’s blade on the end of a long shaft. And the iconic dual curved swords used in Odorichambara, the Katana and Wakizashi.

Combat almost never takes place in the waters between the isles. The honourable method having been established to conquer the individual isles and by doing so, conquering the water between them; as to commence bloodshed near population centers under the waves is deemed barbaric and disrespectful.

I think these series of suggestions show a race that can explain relatively unexplained areas of roleplay and allow for the colorful creation of characters and personas in the community. I'm still reading the most of it in finer detail, but I don't see any major complications at this juncture. I may speak to Pat on the matter briefly, but for the time being, I feel I have the authority to place my approval on this topic.
