Quote :
While all Aquilia worship the Pantheon, there is dispute as to which deity created the Mer. There are several sects in Aquilia who distinguish each other by the color of their hair. Aquilia are always born with silvery hair, upon induction to a sect, the high priest will change the color of the Aquiliad's hair to that which represents the deity. Towards the end of their lifetime Elder Aquilia will lose the color in their hair and will join the Elder Council which governs the Mercropolis.

The five sects of the Aquilia along with the distinguishing features are:
The Sect of Shar Black Haired
The Sect of Azuth the Astralborn Brown Haired
The Sect of Eldath White Haired
The Sect of Shaundaku Red Haired
The Sect of Sune Blonde Haired

The Sect of Shar
Quote :
Rival Sects
The Sect of Shaundaku
The Sect of Eldath
The Sect of Sune
Aligned Sects
None

The Sect of Shar believes that the Aquilia where meant to stay hidden from the other races of the world, to live a peaceful life in the Mercropolis, few Aquilia from the Sect of Shar leave the Mercropolis and only to commune with fellow Priests of Shar. The Sect of Shar teach magic, as it is believed commonly that Mer learned to use magic before any other combat type.

The Sect of Azuth the Astralborn
Quote :
Rival Sects
None
Aligned Sects
The Sect of Shaundaku

The Sect of Azuth the Astralborn is set in the idea that the Astralborn God, Azuth, created the Aquilia to be masters of magic. To unlock the knowledge of the source of life itself, the sea. The Sect of Azuth teaches magic and highly recommends it's members pursue it.

The Sect of Eldath
Quote :
Rival Sects
The Sect of Shar
Aligned Sects
The Sect of Shaundaku

The Sect of Eldath believe that they were created by Eldath to be the peacekeepers of the world. Sect of Eldath ambassadors from Mercropolis are present in the capitals cities of every country and/or province of Aeria, excluding Pycheko, and are often involved in community policing organizations, such as the Surnan Watch. The Sect of Eldath usually teaches melee weapons as self-defense tools.

The Sect of Shaundaku
Quote :
Rival Sects
The Sect of Shar
Aligned Sects
The Sect of Eldath
The Sect of Azuth the Astralborn

The Sect of Shaundaku believes that the goddess, Shaundaku, created the Aquilia with legs to explore Aeria and discover new races and civilizations. As an initiation process a follower of Shaundaku must join a pirate crew for 5 years. During their years as pirates, Shaundaku followers learn to use firearms and are recommended to use a combination of guns and melee.

The Sect of Sune
[quote]Rival Sects
The Sect of Shar
Aligned Sects
None

The Sect of Sune believes that the goddess, Sune, created the Aquilia to bring the fine arts and professional prostitution to the whole of Aeria, even where such things are forbidden by law. Priestesses of Sune recommend unarmed training as a useful tool readily available in the heat of the moment.

Here's what I like about this race:
  • They have a good explanation as to why they've never been seen before.
  • They have an interesting culture rife with religious (perhaps also political?) conflict.
  • While they aren't the most original idea in the world, they're not the typical fantasy fare (elves, dwarves, etc.).

Now here's what bugs me:
  • Do they even need wings? Why do they have them?
  • Why do they slowly develop legs as time passes? It strips them of what makes them unique to begin with. I don't see why they would be created like that. Maybe a better idea would be just making them able to change between having legs and having tails, but only after they reach a certain age.
  • I know you're trying to differentiate the sects by giving them different abilities, but it's ultimately up to the player to choose what they're applying for. I think it would be better to just talk about what each sect usually teaches their members. Shar and Azuth teach magic, Eldath teaches melee weapons, etc.

Ok
  • The wings are developed for swimming after the tail is removed, as a faster mode of transportation as they act as many small tails.
  • No one knows why they develop legs as time passes, some take it as a sign that Shaundaku is the creator of the Aquilia and thus the legs are for exploring, but the transmutation is an interesting concept... perhaps triggered by contact with water?
  • I will edit the issue a bit giving more free reign to the player, by making the categories broader, since the player can choose the character's sect as well

Ah, okay. Is that in the original post? If not, you might want to include that somewhere.

That's an awful lot like the movie "Splash"... It would also make it difficult for them to endure rain and such. I think it'd be better if they had more control over it, but it's up to you.

Perhaps only saltwater. Since rain can't be salty.

Sure, okay. Seems good to me in its current state, so I'll give it my accept.

I will wait for others' input before moving this out of Suggestions.

I like the idea, but I'm wary of a few things... I want to say 'approved', but I think you should speak with Pat to make sure the race is properly integrated into Aeria lore. I couldn't tell you if this is problematic or not, Pat's more fluent in the origins of the races of Aeria.

But, for the most part, I like it.

nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope

I don't remember this, nor do I like the fact it's now in 'Races'. It's honestly ridiculous, goofy and very out of place in the world.

I can't sugar coat that. Please, please, please consider what you're accepting here.

waterpeople with wings and that have fins that turn into legs when they get on land, and vice-versa.

i dont know it just sounds sort of stupid? yeah sure the wings make them swim faster or whatever, which is kinda cool i guess, but they wouldnt be able to use them for anything on land and would basically just be for visual aesthetics?

if anything they should just be classified as water-fae / fairies and not have the stupid leg thing. seems more like an excuse to be a...

Elaborate? Bah.

I just cannot see this fitting at all. It's silly. Consult the above post for what I'm on about, too.

One of their major mentioned cultural aspects is prostitution, and they grow legs to go onto land with these little pixie wings and stuff. Their religion is based on the colour of their hair, and they come from a place named "Mercropolis". I appreciate the effort and imagination but it is rather silly, lmao. More befitting of a children's book or something, there's no real call for it to be in our lore. Some things just don't fit within our world, something that is quickly gaining a real sense of what is Aeria as opposed to some loose collection of ideas.

And anyway this thread is oooooooold. Sometimes you just have to say no to suggestions.

i think i understand what you're trying to say, krug, which is that you want to avoid kazuth 2.0

"made for the sake of being cute, made for the sake of cyber, made for the sake of bein a speshul snowflake," so on so forth.

granted, there are a few things I find questionable, but i don't see this going in that direction. as for things classified by the color of physical aspects, dragons are classified by the color of their skin/scales, so, its not like this is a foreign concept.

the only things on this page that seriously bugs me are:

1. that there is an entire sect of their people devoted to prostitution. i acknowledge that this can happen in society, but what the heeeellllll. "Goddess of Beauty, Passion, and the Fine Arts. Daughter of Akash." I don't see anything here that says a follower of Sune is supposed to have sex with everything.

2. the sect of Shar seems to ignore all the other vile things shar is about and seems far too selective in their beliefs, according to your description. In the real world, you can be a devoutly Evangelical Christian or handpick your beliefs as a Catholic ( examples of subfaiths ), you won't really notice a change beyond the changes you make yourself. In Aeria, if you don't follow the dogma of your god to the letter, you gon get smited, bitch. and we all know the kind of dogma shar is all about.

and thats it, really, those are the only things that bug me. The rest is really not all that bad, but the 'merfolk' thing does seem to get underplayed when they're above land. They don't seem to show much dependency on water as adults.

They can worship Korppi instead of Shar.

There's always room for Korppi in your heart.

Korppi is like the Mormonism of Olden. I'm the door-to-door guy.

Can we at least move this out of accepted races and back into suggestions? I mean, clearly and at the very least we have some very mixed opinions.

and seeing how it only has two accepts. it also looks like it was during the time when no one was really active.

After reviewing this thread, I will move this race back to suggestions. It does have some silly aspects ("Mercropolis" is cringe-worthy) and could use some refining. I rather like the idea, but it's not solely my decision. And Noodle being gone creates problems with this as well.

An isolated society of sentient beings deep under the waves with connections to a dark entity, and their own slew of history, lore, culture, and religion:
YES!!

A 'Mercropolis' hidden under the waves with a colorful, bright, wing-sproutin', prostitutin', cutey-times, easily land-striding ways?
Uhm... yeah.

---

While I like the idea of an undersea society, I'm not sure this is what I can support being in the inky, untouchable reaches of the great black depths. This might just be me personally, but this might just be a little much for me, and my person. The seas present mystery, and things from the deep are largely mysterious, eldritch, old, powerful, and unable to be normally communicated with; both realistic and fantastical, it derives a certain... emotion, deep in the human mind.

I like the attempt, I really do; however, I feel that it's not quite enough that it would add to the community in its present state. Then again, I might be a heavily biased fuckwad. anyways, that's where I stand.
