Sanctimonian Common Law
____________________________
Sanctimonian Common Law Tyr

Overview
Established at the founding of the Sanctimonian Crown almost a hundred years ago, the laws of the nation of Sanctimonia are largely based on the laws of previous and concurrent civilizations. If reasonable doubt is found, the accused can claim the right to a trial. All laws hold to the legal principle of 'ignorantia legis neminem excusat'; ignorance of the law excuses no one. Even if a criminal is unaware of the laws and punishment of the land, they are still held accountable. It should be noted that the leniency towards the Dark Arts experienced shortly after the Prophet's death was sharply reversed in the wake of the devastation wrought by Shar and the Forgotten Army. Assume that all cases that end in execution of the accused also involve seizure of the deceased's assets. In cases of multiple violations, the greater crime takes precedence. Example : a criminal is accused of assassinating a government official; the charge of treason takes precedence over assassination, so the criminal is beheaded. In the case that the accused cannot fully pay the fines due, the accused is to enter indentured servitude to the state or the victim until the fine has been suitably paid.
