Elemental Planes (rough idea, not exactly original) Elemental_Planes

I have come to rather fall in love with this image, I find it and its implications very interesting. It basically shows the Elemental Planes as all part of one large sphere, different parts of the sphere corresponding to different elements. On the top of the sphere is the positive energy plane, the essence of life (actually lethal to most races, they will become "overfilled" with life, so to speak, and die) and on the bottom is the negative energy plane (death, also obviously lethal). Now, each plane is theoretically infinitely large, but when two of the primary elements start to meet they combine to form a para-elemental plane (smoke, magma, ooze, ice), and when a plane gets closer to either the positive or negative planes, they form the quasi-elemental planes (radiance, lightning, mineral, steam, ash, dust, salt, vacuum).

Now, I believe adopting this chart would provide us with acceptably robust and varied elemental choices (such as the summoning of elementals, genasi's [planestouched], elemental magic, and similar) as well as giving us a fairly easy way to explain it to others.

Also, I didn't come up with all this myself, the chart and idea are from 3rd edition D&D, which, however, should mean it is open sourced and may be freely used. Now, this is just presenting the idea itself, without fine tuning for lore and whatnot, but I wanted to see what people thought about it.

Oh snap, get Kain in here.

Now, I'm not entirely sure how compatible this is with the current mechanics of the world, but from what I can gauge it sounds like there'd be a lot of flexibility within the context of the use of magic and whatnot.

I notice a pg 26 at the bottom. Realized this was DnD within seeing the image and reading the first sentence of your text. Lol.

Note: A lot of what I'm about to present is uncommon knowledge OOCly, and flat out unknown ICly. The staff and certain veteran players often consider this information when forming large-scale plots. We also use it when figuring out finer details of Aeria. Beyond that, we try to limit this information's spread and use. Now that we've entered an age where characters don't really aspire to have godlike power, though, I feel it's safe and you're all mature enough to use the info responsibly for your roleplaying needs.

Technically speaking, the elements no longer have a single uniform plane, or a set of uniform planes. Elemental lore has changed since the past, and from my understanding, the God of the four elements, Kielm, died, and his spirit mixed with Aeria. So, whatever elemental planes are left would be spread out through Aeria as remnants of his soul.

Even if that was not the case, sadly, this model doesn't hold with the crystal sphere, because the elements would probably be contained in the 'hollow' section of this sphere, with the rest of Aeria, because they'd be created there by the power of the World Storm. They're a very small area, and in truth, they aren't really the 'elements' of the entire world, just the material plane of Aeria, which is why you're more likely to find them between the surface of Aeria and the World Storm than anywhere else.

The outer sections are where the realms of the gods are, divided up in no specific way- we don't really define it because it doesn't need much defining beyond a few specifics, like: the sun is the gateway to Aten's realm, and things like that. Not even sure if that still holds true with the new tower system. I guess the sun would be his tower.

Lastly, beyond the celestial realms is the edge of the Crystal Sphere, the region that is inhabited almost entirely by the Way Matrix and its maintainers, Zero and the Numbers. They guard the Crystal Sphere from any foreign bodies trying to enter, because beyond the sphere is a place with a lot of names. The Origin, the Plane of Grey (sometimes referred to as a Grey Soup), The Plane of Nothingness; it has many names because it's not a single thing. It's a realm of uncertain existences. Chaos gods are formed here by chance, fluctuations, randomness- the primordial bacteria of existence, more or less.

To give you a better idea of my walls of text, allow me to present this poorly made image.

The outermost ring represents the boundary between the Crystal Sphere and the Plane of Grey The ring beneath that is a network of star-fortresses. Between these two planes are star prisons for any foreign bodies that make it into the sphere.

The next ring is comprised of all the celestial planes; you'll notice the top portion there is cleared out. Many reasons for that, but the primary one is that it was eaten away in the formation of Aeria and the World Storm. The lines that lead up into these planes represents souls that go to their respective deities. The lines on the inside of this ring represent those same souls, along with general portions of the celestial planes being dragged down by the pull of the World Storm to be absorbed and further fuel the formation of Aeria.

As you can see, Aeria is not a complete world yet. It's still forming. It's not quite in the infancy it once was, but it's not a complete world yet; it can't even be called a planet. Which brings me to our next object of interest: those purple lines there are what's called the River of Life. This is where the various things drained from the Celestial Realms, including souls, are joined into massive, singular bodies and travel down to the World Storm as streams of energy. They fuel the World Storm, which generates more of Aeria. Something worth noting is that, technically, the River of Life stretches far beyond these limits, but what it pulls in only condenses and manifests at this point. But in reality, the River even reaches all the way out to the Plane of Grey, and is the means by which the Crystal Sphere gains more mass, assimilating new creations via the World Storm.

Now, the last ring here, the half-ring, is Aeria, and the sphere inside that is the World Storm. The region in between is quite dense and full with primal energies forming into more solid, material states. It's a collage of creation, really. You'd be hard pressed to make a perfect diagram of how the energy is distributed because it fluctuates. The closer you get toward the surface of Aeria, though, these regions don't fluctuate so much and start to form patterns, constant ones. In this area, here, one would find the closest things there are to Elemental Planes, and they could even extend all the way out to the surface.

Kudos to anyone who read through all of that. Double Kudos to those who understood it.

Alright, I wasn't aware what our current model was, but this does lead me to another question: How are elementals and genasi's treated? Where (if they even still exist) do they come from? Also, are there other world's that someone in Aeria could ever possibly go to (theoretically, not necessarily in game).

Other worlds as in within the sphere, or outside of the sphere? Outside the sphere, unless Ossus's schemes have come to fruition, no, nothing solid. Inside the sphere, there are in fact a few places one can go to, but it's reserved for the choice few. Example: Kain once traveled to Tyr's Realm. This was after he gave up being the Waymaker, so as powerful as he was, he was but a mortal man at the time. There's also the Vindicator's realm, which Vindicators use as a refuge, both in life and in death.

There are other planes, more traditional ones, and I suppose you could force your way in if you're powerful enough, but typically, you don't want to do that.

As for Elementals, Genasi and the like, those all came from Kielm when he mixed with Aeria. There's some nifty lore on that. Xeloras and Pat are better aware of it then I am, since it was made a bit after my time. If you want to know more, ask them. But, Kielm was the God of the elements, and since he's now a semi-natural part of the world, elementals and genasi should also be naturally occuring.
